Lifeguard Recertification
Refresh your knowledge and skills with this American Red Cross Lifeguard recertification program at the Monroe County Y in Bloomington, Indiana! In order to qualify, your previous American Red Cross Lifeguard certification must not be expired for more than 30 days.
Course Details & Requirements
The two-day course will include a pre-requisite and refresher day, including the 300-yard swim, brick retrieval, and tread water. The second day will include the in-water final and final written exam.
Prerequisite Skills Assessment:
1. Swim 300 yards, continuously demonstrating breath control and rhythmic breathing. Candidates may swim using the front crawl, breaststroke, or a combination of both. Swimming on the back or side is not allowed. Swim goggles may be used.
2. Tread water for two minutes using only the legs. Candidates should place their hands under their armpits. Complete a timed event within 1 minute and 40 seconds.
3. Starting in the water, swim 20 yards. Swim goggles are not allowed. Surface dive, feet-first or headfirst, to a depth of 7-10 feet to retrieve a ten-pound object. Return to the surface and swim 20 yards on the back to return to the starting point with both hands holding the object, keeping the face at or near the surface to breathe (or to get a breath).
