Challengers 

This is a program for youth who enjoy the great outdoors, games, and challenges.  This camp is a perfect opportunity for the campers to express their individuality. Their input regarding the activities, including field trips, is a desired and essential part of their experience.  Campers will also participate in numerous outdoor activities, the goal of which is to allow them to appreciate many of the wonderful things nature has to offer. Meets at the lower shelter located behind the soccer fields.

Into the Wild 

The YMCA’s resident woodsman, Aaron, is back to help campers explore the wilderness in ways they never imagined!  Into the Wild is not for the faint of heart, but is extraordinarily rewarding.  This unique camp experience provides campers with the opportunity to develop some familiarity with the wilderness.  Previous camps have included instruction in the following areas: basic woods safety, matchless fire making and safety, plant identification, bow construction, animal tracking, and hand-crafted pottery.  There is no telling what other activities Aaron has planned for this year! Meets at the lower shelter located behind the soccer fields.

Campabilities (ages 11-16)

A transition camp for kids who need extra support. 

This program is designed to meet the needs of campers with unique capabilities and challenges. Camp will take place in a small group setting in the safety of the YMCA, with staff specifically trained to teach children with special needs.  Campers will be given the opportunity to enjoy the full camp experience with swimming, games, crafts, songs and field trips.   Pack a swim suit and sack lunch.  Meets in the camp barn located behind the YMCA.

Safe Sitters (ages 11-13)

"Better Sitters Today ..... Better Parents Tomorrow"

This medically accurate instructions series teaches boys and girls how to handle emgergencies when caring for young children.  Safe Sitters will learn basic life-saving techniques, safety precautions, how and when to summon help, and tips on basic child care.  Students must demonstrate the correct care for the choking infant/child, rescue breathing and pass a written exam.  A certificate of completion will be given.  Class is limited to 16 students.  Manual included.  Bring a sack lunch.

Raccoon Circles (Low Ropes/Leadership)  (Ages 9 - 14)

Join us for a challenging and adventurous week of low ropes and leadership training!  We will explore teamwork, concensus building, creative problem solving, effective communication, decision making, goal setting, puzzles and games.  This outdoor adventure will one you will never forget with skills that will last a lifetime!  Meets in the Nature Center; follow the trail by the YMCA bus stop.

Days: Monday - Friday

British Soccer Camp

This camp will provide young players with the rare opportunity to receive high-level soccer coaching from a team of international experts right in the heart of their own community.  Each day will include individual foot skills, technical drills, small-sided games and a daily tournament.  Equally important, the Challenge coaching staff provides your child with lessons in self-discipline, good sportsmanship, and respect for others and for the game. Includes Challenge soccer ball and shirt.  Also ask about the opportunity to host a coach in your home!  Register three weeks before camp started to avoid a $15 late fee.

Gymnastics

Gymnastics Camp at the YMCA is a fun and safe way to spend the summer months!  Join us this summer for swimming, outdoor games, and of course GYMNASTICS!   All four apparatus will be taught (floor, bars, beam and vault).  In the morning campers will spend time outside and swim.  Following lunch campers will return to the gym to escape the heat of the day for gymnastics fun and learning.  Our campers will gain friendships, build confidence, and stay active all while having fun!

Y-Tri Camp  (Ages 6-14)

The main purpose of this camp is to expose more children to lifetime activities like biking, swimming, running and ultimately, a triathlon.  The camp is structured to promote health, wellness, and fun while building self confidence and a positive attitude.

L.I.T. (Leader In Training) 

(12 year-olds and all first time participants)

Through their experiences in assisting both campers and counselors in the day camp setting, LIT’s will be given the chance to test both their social skills and leadership potential while taking on the responsibilities for the care and supervision of others.  Performance will be evaluated by their counselors and camp site directors.  These evaluations will be a valuable learning tool for future growth.

C.I.T. (Counselor In Training - Level II) 

(second year participants and those up to 15 years of age)

At the C.I.T. level, participants become more actively involved in the planning and implementation of Camp Arrowhead activities.  Along with greater expectations comes the need for training experience that stesses personal and practical skills that are essential to leadership development.

Placement options for the L.I.T. and C.I.T. positions include the above listed camps.  Whenever possible, the applicant’s first choice of placement will be honored.  However, final decisions may have to be made on the basis of camp needs and on the past performance evaluation of the participant.
