Sustainability at the YMCA The YMCA is striving to contribute to the sustainability of our community and our world. What is Sustainability? Sustainability: Meeting present needs without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. |

Grounds We are proud of our grounds, which offer beautiful space for exercise, relaxation and learning. Wooded areas, running and walking trails, athletic fields, picnic areas, and native plantings are just some of the features you'll find outside at the YMCA. To keep our grounds beautiful and healthy, the YMCA practices safe, organic lawn care, avoiding the use of lawn chemicals and watering only where necessary. We have also planted many native trees, grasses, and flowering plants.
To further promote the sustainability of our grounds, the YMCA has partnered with seniors in Indiana University's Human Biology Program. As part of their Spring 2010 senior capstone course, students studied and applied the principles of sustainability to the development of conceptual plans for sustainably re-landscaping six areas of our grounds. Considering the lawn from evolutionary, historical, ecological, health, economic, cultural and political perspectives, students developed plans for reducing the energy, financial cost, and pollution associated with conventional lawns while creating beautiful new outdoor spaces that celebrate Indiana's natural heritage, promote biodiversity, help to mitigate flooding issues, and provide more color, fun, and opportunities for physical and mental renewal, learning, and connecting with nature. |
